Who is the Early Language Program?

The Early Language Program serves Deaf or Hard of Hearing children aged 9 months to 36 months and their families. A team of Deaf and hearing adults provides a play-based, language-rich environment using American Sign Language and Spoken English. We work to meet each child’s individual language needs, being mindful of their access to sound, use of amplification technology (hearing aids, cochlear implants, BAHA, etc.), culture, and home language. The program is free and provided at no cost to families.

Our goal is to empower children with the tools they need to develop experience-based language, self-confidence, relationships with peers and adults, and a foundation for literacy success.

Our goal is to empower families with the knowledge and tools they need to support their Deaf or Hard of Hearing child, communicate in a shared language, strengthen family connections, and build a greater community.

Core Values

Communication

We aim to foster language and communication; develop thinking and problem-solving skills; and nurture socialization through sign language and spoken English; based on each child’s individual communication access and needs.

Deaf Space

We value using American Sign Language, recognizing Deaf role models, maintaining Deaf spaces, and supporting children beginning to develop their Deaf identity.

Environment

We believe a language-rich environment is crucial to the development of young children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

We believe that non-structured, spontaneous play provides natural opportunities to build on children’s existing language.

Skills

We believe it is crucial to create activities enabling children to master developmentally appropriate skills, learn new vocabulary, express themselves, and build confidence in who they are while having fun.
